Size

Holotype, 36·1 mm SL (male). Size will exceed this.

Meristics

D = 12-13, A = 16-17, ll = 27-30 +2-3.

Fadugu - SL 03 / 15. Sympatric species include Epiplatys cf. njalaensis, Archiaphyosemion guineense, undetermined characids, gobies, and cyprinids, probably Barbus leonensis, B.stigmatopygus and a small undetermined Barbus specimen.

 

 

 

Kabala - SL 03 / 17. Original collection only small fish collected in a rice swamp. Eckhard Busch visited in 1993 & 2003 & reported an intensified agricultural use of the land.

 

 

 

Lenghe Curoh - SL 03 / 16. Sympatric species include Arch. guineense.

 

 

 

Type Locality

SL 03/16. Collected on 18th November 1993 by B.Wiese & Eckhard Busch. Lenghe Curoh, Sanghi or Sanigi River (Holotypes). Paratopotypes collected at Fadugu, at the bridge over the Mabakah River (same date). One male collected at Kabala, in a rice swamp put in preservative.

Distribution

Currently known as between the Sula & Wara Wara mountains, northern Sierra Leone. Endemic to the Seli or Rokel River basin. Eckhard Busch reports that he could find no overlap in the distribution area of S.wieseae & S.bertholdi.

Habitat

Small rivers & rice fields.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Differs from it's closest relative S.bertholdi in having heavier red spots in body & caudal fin.
Series of heavy red spots running along Anal & dorsal fins of males near the body. Blue outer margins.

Colour/Pattern Variability Fairly low as currently only colected from 3 locations.

Breeding Notes

Probably similar to S.bertholdi.
