Voinjame - Type locality. Collected by Schmitt & Guignard in 1976 & originally distributed as KCF 4. Roloff originally considered these fish to be Rol.melantereon in 1977.

Reportedly a difficult species to breed. A permanent breeding setup has been used successfully. Eggs hatch in 14-20 days of water incubation. Fry are not harmed by the parents with sufficient cover but the larger fry should be removed to prevent their eating the younger fry.

Sexual maturity is attained at around 6 months.
