Type Locality

Lake Orsedi (then Lake Arsadé), northeast Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Boulenger in Freshwater Fishes of Africa Vol III 1915 reports types from Southern Ethiopia & Lake Naiwasha. Types in Genoa Museum.

Distribution

Ethiopia & Kenya. This sp. is found in a large distribution area in lakes & river basins from Ethiopia to Nairobi, Kenya.

Habitat

Clear, slow moving waters with vegetation. Also found near river banks. Water depth up to 5 metres. Water pH alkaline to neutral. Water temperature ranges from 24 - 34°C.

Breeding Notes

Spawns in top vegetation or spawning mops. Water incubated eggs reported to incubate for 14 days.
