  • CMM 8 - Collected near the Edea to Kribi road by Kämpf, Sonnenberg & Tränkner in 2000.
  • C 01 / 77 - Collected by Kullmann, Misof & Sonnenberg 2001 in a small stream crossing the Edea - Kribi road near the village of Koukoué.
  • C 01 / 78 - Collected by Kullmann, Misof & Sonnenberg in 2001 at Mangoule on the Douala - Edea road 1· 5 km from the exit to Yabassi. This was a swampy habitat on the left of the road behind the last houses & is reported as easy to see.
  • KV 03 / 14 - Collected by Kullmann & Völker in 2003 in a small stream crossing the Mbambou - Mouanko road a few kilometres from the Oil Palm Plantation towards Mouanko.
Type Locality

On the road from Edea to Dizangue & Ndonga in the Koungué. Found in a small forest stream near the village Koungué Ndonga. This location fished by Kämpf, Sonnenberg & Tränkner in 2000.
This location was a small river/stream in forest approx 3 metres wide & 0·4 m deep. The bottom was sand covered by mud & leaves. Water temperature 26°C, air temperature 28°C, pH 4·9, conductivity 10µS/cm.
Sympatric species at this location - Epiplatys infrafasciatus, A.ahli, Kribia nana, young Benitochromis cf.finleyi & Barboides gracilis.

Distribution

North of Kribi up to Douala, near the Wouri River. Replaced southerly by A.loennbergii & northerly by A.splendopleure.

Habitat

Distinguishing Characteristics Chromaphyosemion can be extremely hard to seperate. Finding some small marking to seperate this species can be hard but from photos to hand which are thought to be this species you can see a small trait in the upper part of the caudal fin.The first red 'flared' line is quite distinct & bold. The submarginal red band is more a series of 'flares' than a solid line.

History

During initial collections in the range of this species Chauche, Mallet, Poliak (1985 - CCMP 85 / 8 & 85 / 9) & also Eberl, Legros & Vlijm (1989 - C 89 / 33 & 89 / 47) reported differences with A.splendopleure which at the time were thought to be in this range.
Later, all Chromaphyosemion collected between Douala & Kribi were assigned the name sp.aff.splendopleure Dizangue.
In 2005 & 2006 J.F.Agnèse published DNA results of splendopleure. However, the results led to some confusion & Sonnenberg attempted to classify splendopleure populations on colouration. This led to the description of koungueense.
