Distribution

The closest species geographically is A.alpha but is different in it's colouration, pattern & size.
The other two geographically closest species are A.lugens (Afan Essokie) and another undescribed species originating from Bibabimvoto (A.aff.splendopleure in Legros, 1995 and A.(Chrom) sp. No.4 in Eberl 1996. A distance of 7 km separates these two species.
Above information taken from Oliviers article in the KCF Journal in references below.

Habitat

Two of the known biotopes are each located in a small stream belonging to the drainage, Abanga and Avébé, tributaries of the Komo River.
Sympatric species found at LEC 93 / 24 - A.microphtalmum, E.sexfasciatus s.l., Mormyridae, shrimps & small water snake.
On the 13th January 1993 at 16.00 hrs water temperature 22·4°C, air temperature 25·9°C, pH 6·3, DH 0, Conductivity 30µ.
Two photos in the KCF article referenced below show a laterite road over a stream. Poles on the small bridge suggest this area may be subject to flooding.

Breeding Notes

Reportedly difficult to breed. Legros (see References below) reports they require acid water of 4·5 - 5·5 even up to the third generation.
Eggs at 21°C require water incubation for 2-3 weeks. Sexation occurs at 3·5 months. Young fish start laying eggs at 7-8 months.
Olivier found that young fry for the first months of life stay at the surface.
