Type Locality

Song Mahi, in the western area of eastern Cameroon.

Distribution

A restricted distribution area around Song Mahi at the foot of the Ngovayang Hills. They were found in the Nyong River drainage.

Habitat

Small brooks. Known to inhabit shallow water between 1 - 5 cm.
The type locality was a clear, fast flowing stream with a soil base & was well shaded. They have also been found in a pool 40 x 40 cm with a depth of 8 cm near this location. Air temperature at 10.00 hrs on the 28th July 1977 was 23·5°C, pH 6·5.
In a locality 2 km further down the road from the type locality in a pond adjacent a flowing stream the sp. E.infrafasciatus (then thought to be baroi), A.loennbergi, Barbus sp. & Mormyrid sp. were also found.

Distinguishing Characteristics First reports stated 15 'flamed' vertical lines from the pectoral to the caudal. This is not evident however in all specimens.
Berkenkamp's line drawing shows a submarginal ring around the outer edges of the caudal.

History

First collected in 1977 by Heinemann, Lenz & Ganzer at Song Mahi, 35 km southwest of Eseka & 8 km southeast of Song Mbong. in the Nyong drainage of eastern Cameroon.
The Song Mahi population was originally distributed as Aphyosemion spec. Song Mahi.

BKA Species Import Committee distributed them in the UK in July 1980.

Breeding Notes

Reportedly an easy species to breed. Eggs are laid on mops & should be collected to hatch in seperate containers. Incubation takes 10-20 days. Young fish grow quickly & reach sexual maturity around 4 months.
