  • Edéa - Yaoundé Km 18 (Variations in patterning have been noted in this population, particularly in the caudal fin)
  • Edéa - Yaounde Km 35
  • Mbébé (western Cameroon)
  • Pouma

Type Locality

Mapubi, which is 35 km to the east of Edéa.
Amiet assigned the code PK 18 to the type material, collected on the Edéa - Yaoundé road ' on the left side '.

Distribution

A species with a restricted area of distribution in the coastal lowland. Found in a hilly area south of the Sanaga River 50 kms south of Edea & between the Nyong & Sanaga Rivers of western Cameroon.
Distribution range according to Amiet is only 60kms long as the crow flies.
A.edeanum & A.amoenum appear to be in competition with each other. On the eastern limit of A.edeanum range it is replaced by A.amoenum where the terrain is not suited to A.edeanum.

Habitat

Small pools in rainforested areas.
Sympatric species include Fp.amieti, A.amoenum, A.loennbergi & E.sexfasciatus.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Deep red/brown on the frontal area of the body. Distinguished by the colouration & patterning of the anal fin.

A.edeanum

A.ahli

A.calliurum

Colour/Pattern Variability Given the distribution area probably low.
History

Scheel originally considered this sp. to be calliurum.but noticed a difference in chromosome arm numbers. Amiet considered the colouration to be distinctly seperate from calliurum & ahli.
This, together with a small distribution area prompted him to describe edeanum.

Amiet originally found the type specimens at several locations in 1987.

In 1989 Legros, Vlum & Eberl assisted by Guy Claveau visited one of these locations 18kms east of Edéa on the Axe Lourd to Yoaundé. This was location C 89/31.

In 1991 Grell & Eberl revisited this site & brought back live fish to Europe.

Breeding Notes
