History

Caught in a small stream at Kujana (this could be a mis-spelling. My map shows Kujama to be in this area), south east of Kaduna. This population is, in all likelyhood the population masquerading as Jos Plateau as they were caught at Kujana by John Hughes & distributed in the BKA as Jos Plateau in 1972.
It was initially observed to lay eggs which incubated for 3 weeks in water of 70-72°F. No resting eggs were observed.
Interesting to note this location is not on the Jos Plateau. Re-imported from mainland Europe to the UK in 1983.
KFN adverts listed them as Kaduna.

In 1974 Fred Wright (BKA) received eggs of a sp. of 'gardneri' collected within a 5 mile radius of Kaduna, Nigeria. Fish were brought in hand luggage on the plane. Three fish were raised from this import which all turned out to be males. This collection caught by Fred & N.W.Emery.

Habitat

In an article in BKA newsletter No. 115, March 1975 co-written by Fred & N.W.Emery three black & white photographs showed the collection site.
The streams in this area had a base of fine sand & sedimentous soil. Sympatric sp. included Epiplatys bifasciatus, Procatopus aberrans, Hemichromis bimaculatus, H.fasciatus, Barbus sp. & Tilapia sp. The water was measured by Radda as being: water temperature 30°C, pH 6·8, DH ·64. Water flow was reportedly minimal.
Streams were overgrown at the edges (where the fish were caught).
In this area peak rainfall is during the end of July to September. A dry season exists from October to around April.
This page ammended 21/10/2008 with additional information provided by the collector (Nick Emery).

Notes
Kaduna is named after the Hausa language for Crocodiles that lived in the river & surrounding areas.
The river Kaduna originates from the Jos Plateau.
