History
Imported by BKA Species Maintenance in the summer of 1974 (August/September).
Habitat
Situated at the headwaters of the River Donga, south eastern Nigeria. This river flows from the mountains (Baissa is 1000 metres above sea level) into the River Benue near Jibu. Baissa is hemmed in on 3 sides by mountains. The River Donga is the only river to drain the area.

Probably the first photo of Baissa taken in the UK by Mel Addicott. Note this form & the photo above which have few red spots on the body. Forms imported into the BKA in 1982 & 1989 had many spots but over successive generations these are starting to become less, reverting to a form similar to this (from personnal correspondance with Roger Gladwell)

Traits

A yellow phenotype with characteristic orange to the outer marginal bands of unpaired fins.
Unpaired fins are a deep yellow/orange, sometimes appearing quite orange. A good identifier is the rear of the dorsal fin which carries a red line between the 3rd & 4th rays. This marking has been a constant feature in many different individuals from different sources.

Variability
Can be a variable population.
