A thread on the AKA newsgroup July 2000 brought these 3 photos online. All were purchased as Akamkpa in the USA. Doubts were cast as to their true identity.

The 'Akkamkpa spot' in the anal fin is present although it has moved more centrally.

Akkamkpa Jay had 2 colour forms from the same parents, this lighter form & the dark form on the right.

I have digitally enhanced some of the rear of the image to illustrate the main identifiable points as the front part of the fish was over exposed. Photo copyright Jay-Scott Moylan. Re-printed with kind permission.

This photo sent from the USA. Possibly Akkamkpa. Note spot in anal fin which has moved away from the edge & less spotted body in the rear half. Note also the line of spots above/behind pectoral fin.

Akkamkpa (My poor attemps at fish photography in the early 1980's. Note anal fin spot.)

Akkamkpa bought at the 2003 Manchester auction showing typical traits for this population.

Traits

This population can be identified by the red spot at the rear of the anal fin close to the body. This spot has been a constant feature in most specimens maintained & studied from this population.
